LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is a specialized counseling approach that validates and celebrates diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. It actively supports the client's lived experiences and addresses how societal stigma and minority stress impact mental well-being, rather than viewing these identities as issues to be cured. We celebrate and honor who you are.

Key Principles of Affirmative Care

Validation: Identities are embraced as normal, healthy variations of the human experience.

Safe Spaces: Therapy is conducted free of judgment, heteronormative assumptions, or bias.

Cultural Competence: Therapists have specific training in LGBTQIA+ issues, including the effects of microaggressions, family rejection, and coming out.

Client-Centered: The journey is tailored to empower you to build authenticity and strengthen your self-worth.

Respect for Identity:  Honoring each person's sexual orientation, gender identity, and lived experience without judgment.

Authenticity: Supporting clients in exploring and expressing their genuine selves.

Inclusivity: Welcoming people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, relationship structures, and family configurations.

Intersectionality: Recognizing that LGBTQ+ identities intersect with race, culture, disability, spirituality, neurodivergence, and other aspects of identity.

Advocacy and Equity: Acknowledging systemic barriers and supporting clients in navigating a world that may not always affirm their identities.

Self-Determination: Respecting clients' autonomy and right to define their own identities, relationships, and life paths.

“Authenticity is the capacity to know what you feel, to be connected to your body, and to express yourself honestly.”

~Gabor Maté~

Why working with a therapist who is LGBTQIA+ Affirming is Important

Not every person is a safe person to be yourself around. Your therapist shouldn't be one of those people. Therapy should be a place to celebrate who you are and the things that make you amazing, while helping you get the support and make the meaningful change you're wanting.

Getting affirmative care is particularly important as the LGBTQIA+ community often experiences higher rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma due to external discrimination. Affirming care ensures you do not have to "educate" your therapist about your identity, defend your right to exist, or hide or tiptoe around parts of who you are. Feeling seen, heard, understood, and accepted can make it easier to focus on your real mental health goals and healing.

Research consistently shows a meaningful overlap between neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ identities. Neurodivergent people are statistically more likely than neurotypical people to identify as LGBTQIA+, particularly in areas of gender diversity and bisexual/pansexual identities.

There are also shared experiences between many neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ folx:

Masking or hiding parts of oneself to fit in

Chronic social rejection or misunderstanding

Higher rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma from stigma

Identity exploration and feeling “different” from peers early in life

Holding multiple marginalized identities can make it hard to feel accepted and understand.

Affirming and neurodiversity-informed mental health care is often especially important to feel safe and to get tailored support for individuals who are both neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+.
